Kitty Hillier : Fleeting Moments

Kitty Hillier installing ‘Fleeting Moments’ at Newquay Orchard

Kitty’s work is rooted in her belief that fundamentally all things are connected. Seeking this out both above and below the surface of what she sees in nature, biomorphic forms are distilled, overlapped and reconstructed through various means. The results are effortlessly playful images and sculptures that reference these observations.

Position all this enquiry against the backdrop of her ongoing research into the divided human brain, communication and plant intelligence. Abstraction coupled with familiarity combine to produce patterns, motifs and structures we can all relate to as essentially ‘natural’ but simultaneously find hard to pin down or identify.

Kitty will lead a series of creative workshops. All senses will be activated to experience and attempt to capture the moment, sparking curiosity in what is unseen and inaudible.

All welcome, no experience necessary.

Workshop 1 : 4 November, 10am - 1pm : Exploring the colours of the Orchard

Using simple colour mixing games to capture the changing hues of the Orchard in this moment, as well as noticing the colour combinations we are personally drawn to as the season shifts. Playing with watery pools of colour to see how the illusion of depth and movement can be created in our studies. At the end of session 1, we will all add our favourite colours to the large-scale collaborative painting and celebrate all the different colours we’ve created and how wonderful they look together.

Workshop 2 : 11 November, 10am - 1pm : Slow looking and experimental drawing

Walking, slow looking, experimental drawing and mark-making to document shapes of seed heads, grasses, ourselves in the landscape, and other details we notice in the moment. Distilling — abstracting, reducing things to their simplest forms alongside exploring movement and expression with ink, allowing space for chance. At the end of session 2, we will layer our favourite inky marks and abstract shapes to the large-scale collaborative painting, and celebrate all the different marks we’ve created and how wonderful they look together.

The resulting collaborative artwork will be displayed in Canteen at the Orchard from 18 November 2022.

This exhibition will be accompanied by a limited edition print, which will be sold to raise funds for Newquay Community Orchard’s Volunteer programme.

Booking will be open soon - contact helloalmaartspace@gmail.com to register
